How High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound Works

High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is a cosmetic treatment for skin tightening that has been described as a non-invasive and painless replacement for face lifts. It requires no local anaesthetic and does not involve any cutting or injecting into the skin. There is no downtime required after treatment as seen in traditional surgical facelifts. HIFU therapy uses ultrasound energy to encourage the production of collagen, which results in firmer skin.

HIFU uses focused ultrasound energy to target the layers of skin just below the surface. It can penetrate both the dermis and the superficial muscular aponeurotic system. These are the same layers that are tightened during conventional facelift surgery. The ultrasound energy causes the tissue to increase in temperature. Once the cells in the targeted area reach a certain temperature it stimulates the cells to produce more collagen — a protein that provides structure to the skin.

The increase in collagen results in tighter, firmer skin with fewer wrinkles. Since the high-frequency ultrasound beams are focused on a specific tissue site below the skin’s surface, there’s no damage to the upper layers of the skin and adjacent issue. As an anti-aging treatment, HIFU can last up to 1-2 years and can continue to firm up your skin for months after your treatment.

Fat dissolving can be achieved using specific ultrasound heads that target the layers of the skin where fat is deposited and stored. Depending on the area of treatment depends on the depth of the ultrasound head used. This feature specifically helps shift fat and tighten the skin for areas such as the stomach, lower back, inner and outer thighs, buttocks, under chin (double chin) and sagging upper arms (loose, fatty skin around triceps area).
